Reader’s Entertainment Radio Show Presents: Altonya Washington

Two things I realized straight off the bat when speaking with Award-winning author, Altonya Washington last night:  One, she is a serious lover of books. Secondly, she has a great sense of humor. The winner of two Romantic Times Magazine Reviewer’s Choice Awards, she recently won the 2014 Romance Slam Jam EMMA Award for Best Steamy Romance. Her latest novel, Treasure My Heart, is in the Kimani Hotties series.  Altonya’s characters have substance, the timeless pull stemming from mutual attraction, and the fact that they are people that have everyday problems like the rest of us with universal appeal.

Treasure My HeartBook Blurb:

The man every woman wants…wants her

There are flings, and then there’s real life. Minka Gerald, assistant to one of the country’s top financiers, is too smart to confuse the two. But a business trip to Miami is the perfect place for a workaholic to let loose, and Oliver—brother to her boss’s fiancée—is the ideal partner-in-pleasure. And with his heartbreaker reputation, that’s as much as she expects.

A ladies’ man doesn’t become a one-woman guy overnight. But once property developer Oliver Bauer has a taste of real connection, he wants more. Outwardly reserved but full of fire, Minka could hold his heart forever. Can he make her believe in him, before an old enemy’s quest for revenge puts her safety and their sizzling new love in jeopardy?

Great Contemporary Fiction!

Political Pundit Karl Rove Pens New Book

0

1896Former Senior Advisor to President Bush, Karl Rove has penned several books. In November of this year publisher Simon and Schuster will release of The Triumph of William McKinley: Why the Election of 1896 Still Matters. Here are details from the publisher’s press release:

Simon & Schuster will publish The Triumph of William McKinley: Why the Election of 1896 Still Matters by Karl Rove, author of the bestseller Courage and Consequence. The book will be published in November 2015 to coincide with the beginning of the 2016 primary season in which at least 16 candidates are vying for the Republican nomination. Priscilla Painton, Vice President and Executive Editor, acquired world, audio and first serial rights from Robert Barnett of Williams & Connolly.

The book offers a fresh look at President William McKinley, whose 1896 campaign defeated William Jennings Bryan. McKinley’s election ended a bitter period of political gridlock and reformed and modernized his party, thereby creating a governing majority that dominated American politics for the next thirty-six years. Rove argues that the 1896 political environment resembles that of today: A rapidly changing electorate affected by a growing immigrant population, an uncertain economy disrupted by new technologies, growing income inequality, and contentious issues the two parties could not resolve. McKinley found ways to address these challenges and win, which is why his campaign is so relevant to our politics now.

“The 1896 election is a compelling drama in its own right—larger than life characters, violence, betrayal, backstabbing and ambition,” says Karl Rove. “But McKinley’s transformative political strategies and campaign tactics offer important lessons for both political parties today who face a similar landscape and many of the same challenges.”

“Karl Rove understands elections with the depth and brilliance of a scholar,” adds Jonathan Karp, President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster. “He brings such deep personal understanding of politics to his description of William McKinley that his book is certain to be a template for thinking about historic Republican leadership as we head into the 2016 presidential campaign.”

Karl Rove served as Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush from 2000-2007 and Deputy Chief of Staff from 2004-2007. He now writes a weekly op-ed for The Wall Street Journal and is a Fox News contributor. Before he became known as “The Architect” of President Bush’s 2000 and 2004 campaigns, Rove was president of Karl Rove + Company, an Austin-based public affairs firm that was involved in over 75 campaigns for Republican candidates for president, governor and senator, as well as handling non-partisan causes and non-profit groups.

Piracy Takedown Rules Needs Updated According to Author’s Guild

0

authors-guildIn an effort to update and improve the Digital Millennium Copyright Act Notice and Takedown Act, the Author’s Guild has ask for Congressional assistance. The current Act states that when a book is pirated:  “A copyright owner is required to send a notice for each separate instance (i.e., copy) of infringement, specifying the URL,” explains the Guild. “But as soon as a pirated copy is taken down, it is usually put right back up. Needless to say, copyright owners cannot keep up with this senseless game, and individual authors do not begin to have the resources to send a new notice every time a pirated copy is posted or reposted.

What the Author’s Guild seeks is a “Notice and Stay-Down provision “once a webhost knows a work is being infringed, it should not continue to receive ‘safe harbor’ immunity from claims of infringement unless it takes reasonable measures to remove all infringing copies of the same work.”

You can read the Author’s Guild letter in it’s entirety here.

Court Rules Royalties To Be Paid to Goebbels Estate

0

Penguin-Random-House-interim-logo123In a controversial decision, Munich District Court in Germany has ruled that royalties must be paid to the family of WWII Nazi and war criminal Joseph Goebbels.

A biography of the Nazi, Goebbels by Peter Longerich, was published by (Penguin)Random Germany house in 2010 and contained excerpts taken from Goebbels personal diaries. Random House Germany was sued by the Goebbels estate for using those excerpts without compensation to the estate. Ironically, the lawyer for the estate is Cordula Schacht – his father was Hitler’s minister of economics.

Random House Germany argued that the excerpts were historical in nature and not subject to copyright laws and they should be allowed free use on moral grounds. The Munich court disagreed and ordered Random House Germany to pay royalties to the Goebbels estate.

“We are shocked by the [court’s] lack of historical interest…. They took the easy road. [They] can go on ignoring the fundamental question: should money go to the estate of a war criminal?” said Rainer Dresen, the general counsel of Random House Germany.

Random House Germany is appealing through the German supreme court.

Parenthood can be exciting, but it brings many challenges. New parents often find it difficult to adjust to this major life change. Fortunately, there are many books that can help expectant parents prepare for their new baby. Below is a list of classic books expectant parents should consider reading.

The Baby Owner’s Manual by Joe Borgenheit and Louis Borgenheit

Six Tried and True Literature Picks for Expecting Parents 1
You’ve probably heard parents say that children don’t come with an instruction manual, and while that is true, The Baby Owner’s Manual will make it a lot easier for new parents to get through the first year. This book covers topics like getting a newborn to sleep through the night, how to swaddle the baby, and when it is time to take the baby to the doctor.

The Baby Book: Everything You Need To Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two by Martha and William Sears

Six Tried and True Literature Picks for Expecting Parents 2
This book will teach you some of the most important things you need to know about your baby’s first two years of life. It covers topics like how to handle your baby’s first few days at home, giving a baby a bath for the first time, and developmental milestones, such as crawling, walking, and talking. It also discusses fevers, colds and other health concerns. This book was written by a registered nurse and medical doctor.

The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp

Six Tried and True Literature Picks for Expecting Parents 3
Many parents are frustrated because their baby seems to cry for hours on end, and cannot figure out why. The Happiest Baby on the Block discusses some of the most common reasons babies cry, and methods that can soothe them. It also talks about ways parents can get their baby to sleep longer at night.

Baby 411 by Denise Fields

Six Tried and True Literature Picks for Expecting Parents 4
Most new parents have a lot of questions about their newborn. What should I look for in a pediatrician? What can I do to get my baby to sleep through the night? Why is my baby so fussy? The answers to all of those questions and much more can be found in Baby 411. It’s a great starter for your family and can help you find solutions for all those tricky problems.

Honey, I Wrecked the Kids by Alyson Schafer

Six Tried and True Literature Picks for Expecting Parents 5
Discipline is one of the keys to raising a happy, respectful, and well-adjusted to child. However, discipline is something many parents struggle with. They always wonder whether they are doing too much or too little. Honey, I Wrecked the Kids discusses effective discipline techniques, and the author is a psychotherapist. It’s a great tool for getting the hang of good parenting skills.

50 Things to Know About Surviving the First Year of Parenthood by Lisa Marie Rusczky

Six Tried and True Literature Picks for Expecting Parents 6
If there is anything you want to know about your baby’s first year, then you will probably be able to find it in this book. It discusses baby feeding, baby clothes size charts, and baby medicine basket items. This book also talks about things you should know before giving birth, such as what you should pack when you are going to the hospital to deliver. The book also discusses ways you can take the stress out of traveling with a new baby.

Most parents agree that while having a new baby can be a very joyful experience, it can also be a very difficult one. You can prepare for parenthood by reading these books before your baby arrives. Also remember to rely on more than just these resources. Ask your doctor about pregnancy and delivery and what to expect those first few weeks. Your obstetrician might be able to direct you to more resources than you might have known about. Dr. Gilbert Webb always directs high risk patients to support groups, for example, so they know they aren’t alone in their situation. It’s a scary time, but parenthood is a learning experience and with the right starts, you’ll be good to go.

Open Library: Will There Still be a Place for Books in the Internet Age?

0

In 2011, the popular book store Borders filed for bankruptcy and many news articles pondered if this was the beginning of the end for the printed word. In 2015, the largest Christian bookstore (FCS) also filed for bankruptcy. However, the battle between traditional books and non-traditional books is far from being over.

Open Library Will There Still be a Place for Books in the Internet Age 2

E-Books
According to the Pew Research Center, over 20 percent of American’s have read an e-book. In fact, the average e-book reader completes 24 books within a year. Research has found that e-book readers are also avid traditional book readers and many major companies, such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, offer e-books for sale with instant digital access. Other open source projects, such as Project Gutenberg, started offering free e-books back in the 1970’s. They currently offer almost 50,000 free public domain e-books. There are also many smart phone apps that offer free e-book downloads. While there is ongoing debate about e books, their condensed reading format means more readers, and a greater space for the written word.

Audiobooks
About 10 percent of Americans prefer to listen to audiobooks today. Gone are the days when consumers had to purchase tapes or CDs to listen to their favorite book. Major companies, such as Amazon and Audible, offer audiobooks for sale online. In addition, open source projects such as Librivox, offer almost 9,000 free public domain audiobooks. Librivox is unique because volunteers around the world record all of the digital audiobook content. Audiobooks are convenient for busy adults who can easily listen to anything, anywhere, through their smartphone or tablet.

Changing Technology
Libraries and bookstores were previously the only source of accessing printed material, but today the internet and new technology have made books available to be read anytime, anywhere. Consumers can now choose from using their smart phone, tablet, e-reader, and laptop to access and read books. Instead of carrying a heavy hardback book on the bus, anyone can simply read a book while also listening to music and engaging in social media through their smart phone. Technology has made books universally accessible through different platforms and fundamentally changed the way we see the written word.

Open Library Will There Still be a Place for Books in the Internet Age

Libraries
Most people assume libraries are a dying public service, but according to a recent CNN report, libraries are not dying, but evolving with the changing world. In fact, there has been an increase in the use of public libraries in the last 10 years. For example, the Seattle Public Library receives more than seven million visitors every year. Libraries now also offer e-books and audiobooks for download as well as free Wi-Fi for easy research. Libraries are making a comeback by offering additional services and evolving with technology, and more and more people are getting education in library science. A Masters in library science is an excellent way to contribute to your community and still take part in the digital age.

Technology may have changed how we access printed material, but books are here to stay.

Sneak Peek: Forward Pass by Desiree Holt

Get Ready to Play Rough

Shay Beckham grew up idolizing her brother’s best friend, star quarterback Joe Reilly. There was no one in their Texas town who had the moves to match Joe on or off the field. Years later, he’s still a player who has what it takes to drive any hot-blooded woman wild. But Shay isn’t a kid with a bad case of hero-worship anymore. She’s grown-up and independent, with her feet on the ground and a serious head on her shoulders. If she could just say the same for Joe.

It’s been fifteen years, but Joe Reilly hasn’t forgotten the skinny little kid who used to follow him around like a shadow. What he can’t get over is that the skinny shadow has grown into one hell of an incredible woman. One any man in his right mind would kill to get his hands on. And one who seems to be completely immune to him. He knows he and Shay could have something special together. If he could only convince her he’s about more than just the game.

Excerpt

Traffic was still not moving. Shay bit down on her frustration, sighed again, and unzipped the front pocket of her carry-on. She’d grabbed a sports magazine in the airport, planning to check the ads her company was running, but hadn’t bothered to read it on the plane. Maybe she could use it to pass the time now.

Flipping it open, the first thing she saw was Joe Reilly’s face smiling at her in full living color. Crap. Joe Reilly. Her childhood hero, her teenage crush, and the star of her adult erotic fantasies. The same Joe Reilly who’d called her squirt and pest when she tagged after him and Hank. The football idol who had been a babe magnet since his voice changed.

The man she’d been secretly in love with all these years, a love that stilted every other relationship she’d had. When was she ever going to admit that it was an impossibility? That she needed to stomp on it, bury it, and move forward?

In Texas, where football was the number one religion, high school stars wrote their own tickets. As the star quarterback for the Granite Falls High School Coyotes, Joe had had women hanging over him like so much drapery. During his outstanding career in college and then in the NFL, it seemed every time she turned on the television or checked sports online she saw his picture with one female or another. She was sure he had a black book that rivaled an encyclopedia in size. She might as well have been chopped liver for as much attention as he ever paid to her.
