Every Step She TakesEvery Step She Takes by Jannine Gallant

You can run from the past, but you can’t hide . . .

Tough as nails, no nonsense San Francisco reporter Grace Hanover will do anything to cover the story of the decade—and her career. Having survived a painful past, she’s learned never to let anything stand in her way. Even if it means following a key witness into the Alaskan wilderness, and partnering with Travis Barnett, a former Navy SEAL turned PI who’s working for the Feds, and who would love to bring in Grace’s witness before she can get her story. But together in the wilderness, they’ll each have to put aside their differences and trust one another if they want to survive.

Because someone from Grace’s past is watching, waiting for just the right moment. Every step Grace takes draws her deeper into the line of fire, and into the hands of a killer…

Every Step She Takes is currently available for pre-order at all online retailers. The official release day is tomorrow, July 7th!

Excerpt:

Something shook the underbrush near the tent. A branch snapped. At her feet, Wylie growled low in his throat. Goose bumps pebbled Grace’s skin.

She lifted her head. “Do you think it’s a bear?”

“Sounds more like a raccoon. If we’d left the dog outside like I wanted, we wouldn’t have to worry about wildlife wandering through the camp.”

“He looked so sad.”

Travis snorted.

“Well, he did.” She moved her feet in the sleeping bag, planting them more firmly beneath the dog’s welcome warmth.” Pressed against the tent wall on one side and Travis on the other, space was limited. Between fear of the unknown outside the thin nylon and the threat to her peace of mind on the inside, she’d probably never fall asleep.

“Relax, even if it is a bear, it won’t bother us. I’d back your furry champion against the meanest grizzly.”

Some of the tension drained out of her. “There’s a reason I gave him half my stew.”

“I thought reporters were tougher than old jerky. You’re a marshmallow, Grace.”

Warmth flowed through her at his teasing. In the tight confines of the tent, she could hear every breath he took, smell the scent of his soap, feel each tiny movement. She wanted to roll over and snuggle even closer. Gritting her teeth, she resisted the urge.

He turned on his side and stoked one finger across her cheek, the pad rough against her skin. “I’m not going to put the moves on you, so relax.”

Her heartbeat quickened. “I know you’re not.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“I wish you’d stop being so damned nice. It makes sticking to my plan twice as hard as it should be.”

In the dark, she felt more than saw his smile.

“Maybe you need a new plan.”

Motherless Days: Nora Raleigh Baskin on Children and Mothers Separated by Prison Bars

0

ruby-on-the-outside-9781442485037_lg

We all love Orange is the New Black: It’s fierce, feminist, and fearless in its portrayals of complicated and real women. Gender and sexuality have been frequent show topics in the past, though the start of season three focuses mainly on motherhood. One inmate’s husband questions whether it’s a smart decision for their daughter to keep visiting her mother in prison, while another is pregnant and facing some big decisions once her child is born. These stories are more than just plot though: They’re reflecting the real experiences that women and their children face every day in America. Here, author Nora Raleigh Baskin talks about the challenges faced by mothers and their children when they’re separated by bars and how their stories inspired her to write her latest middle grade novel, Ruby on the Outside.

Ruby on the Outside is probably the only book I’ve written where I can pinpoint exactly the moment I decided to write it. I was accompanying a friend to a Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) charity fundraiser. After cocktails and tours of the house, after hors d’oeuvres and small talk, the event began. The president of RTA spoke, then some of the volunteer professional actors, and then an ex-prisoner. As I listened, I was humbled and somewhat ashamed to learn that there are over 2.2 million incarcerated adults in our country, more than any other county in the world. It is a huge and disproportionate percentage of our society and it was something I knew nothing about. It is a hidden, secret population. What struck me next was the understanding that there is an even greater number, completely innocent, that are possibly more affected by our broken criminal justice system: the children of parents who are incarcerated.

At the end of the afternoon, I wrote my modest check to RTA and I left feeling unsettled and useless. Here were professionals, lawyers, doctors, and philanthropists trying to repair this system, people with far more experience, money, and time than I had. What could I possibly do?

Well, I could do what I do: Write.

Unlike my first novels (which were almost entirely autobiographical), my more recent work has required a great deal of research. For this work my inquiries quickly led me to an organization based out of Queens, NY called Hour Children that works with the children and families of incarcerated mothers, a perfect place to start. Sister Tesa of Hour Children invited me to visit, and in our initial conversations I gained a basic understanding of what a child’s life would be like if his or her mom was in prison: phone calls that resulted in enormous phone bills, difficult visitation procedures, and the children’s center within the walls of the prison itself. She then suggested I contact Emani Davis, one of the children portrayed in the non-fiction book, All Alone in the WorldEmani welcomed me into her home and generously told me her story. Sister Tesa also told me about the wonderful documentary by Jenifer McShane,Mothers of Bedford which gave me enormous insight into the effects of incarceration on women and families. But it soon became apparent that the only way I could write an authentic account of a girl whose mother is incarcerated at Bedford Hills Correctional facility was to get inside. I had no idea how impossible a request that was when I asked Alessandra Rose of Hour Children if she could make that happen. She said she would try.

Several weeks after my initial visit to Queens, I was hiking with my dog in the Connecticut woods when I got a call from an unknown number. Something told me to pick it up. The no-nonsense voice identified himself as the official warden for the State of New York Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) and asked if I still wanted to visit the prison in Bedford Hill. I told him I did.

“Be at Bedford Hills. 9AM. Don’t wear green.”

I think that was pretty much the whole conversation.

After visiting the prison (and according to the COs at Bedford Hills, it is unheard of for a writer—with a pad and pen no less—to be allowed inside a prison and to be honest I have no idea why I was granted permission), I was able to begin writing. There was, of course, that pesky little problem of character, backstory, plot, structure, climax, and resolution, but I was able to complete a first draft. Then, because I felt a deep obligation to the children I was writing about, I asked Kellie Phelan, the program coordinator at Hour Children, if she would read my first draft and would she perhaps give it to a few of the children for their comments. Kellie not only read my manuscript and gave me feedback, but she then she offered to organize a book discussion with some of the participants at Hour Children. I also spent the next several months emailing her questions about everything from whether or not hair combs could be brought into the visiting room (they can not) to whether or not the visiting room was air conditioned (it is). I was grateful and nervous, but I immediately made six copies, three-holed punched them all, and fit the pages into loose leaf binders to make it easier for the kids to read. About two months later I returned to Hour Children and met with my special after-school book “club.”

These kids had so much to say. They were honest and open and wise well beyond their years. It was validating for me to learn that I had nailed so many of the issues: the shame, the waiting, the denial. But they were eager to add their own personal details: the way your heart stops when you hear the door opening in the visiting room, the topic of the vending machines and how important sharing “normal” food was to both the parents and kids, the sense of loneliness, anger, and love.

I took notes. I took down their names and I went back to writing with not only more accuracy but more commitment, more understanding, more heart.

I didn’t realize when I first started this project how important it would become to me. I had no idea how much I would come to care, how much I would learn, and how much it has affected my life outside of writing. My eyes are opened to a world I never before knew existed. My hope is that this book starts a conversation, an argument, a discussion, and maybe it comes to mean something important to someone else. Or just makes one child feel a little less lonely.

CAUGHT_EBookCaught by Rhonda Shaw

Shannon Morrison’s dreams of becoming a lawyer are finally coming true.  After landing a job at a prestigious law firm in Chicago, she’s willing to sacrifice everything, including putting her personal life on hold, as nothing will stand in her way of making partner.  Nothing except perhaps the gorgeous Detroit Rockets’ All-Star catcher, Matt Buck.

Just when he didn’t think his luck would turn around, life finally throws Matt a fastball right down the middle, reconnecting him with the one girl who has always intrigued him.  As before, the timing isn’t right, but Matt refuses to let this opportunity pass him by again.  He knows Shannon’s career leaves little room for anything else in her life, but he’s unwilling to give in and will do whatever he can to make them work.

Together, Matt and Shannon struggle through one hurdle after another, determined to find a way to have everything they want.  Just when they’ve finally figured it out, someone from Matt’s past shatters everything, and leaves them both grappling to pick up the pieces…

Excerpt:

Matt let his eyes travel down her lean figure showcased in the black scoop-neck cocktail dress ending mid-thigh and displaying miles of legs capped by sling-back shoes with a silver toe and heel.  Shannon was tall to begin with, but her height didn’t stop her from adding a few additional inches with heels.  He liked that.  He hadn’t dated any tall girls in his past and now he wondered why.  He didn’t miss having to slouch down all the time.

Shannon glanced up and her gaze caught his, giving him a shy smile in return.  She excused herself from the group and headed his way with a flirty look on her face.

“What are you doing tucked in the corner all by yourself?” she asked as she approached him.

Matt shrugged.  “Just chillin’.  Taking in the scene.”

“And?  See anything interesting?” she teased.

He smiled back.  “You could say that, yeah.”

Her face flushed a pretty pink, making his mouth go dry as he imagined her skin holding the same blush in the heat of passion, before she cleared her throat.  “It was too bad the season ended the way it did.  I thought for sure you guys were going to go all the way.”

Great.  He didn’t want to talk about one of the biggest failures of his career, but he put on his game face.

“We all did, but we just couldn’t pull it out at the end.  It sucks, but now there’s next year,” he said, striving for nonchalance even though his stomach tightened with disappointment as the final catch replayed in his mind—again.

Shannon tilted her head as she studied him, concern in her eyes.  “It still bothers you.”

It wasn’t a question, but he nodded, being honest.  “Somewhat.  Did you see it?”

She shook her head.  “No, but Jerry told me everything.  You did what you could,” she insisted.  “It wasn’t just you.”

He let out a huff of frustrated laughter.  “I got out.  It was pretty much all me, but there’s next year,” he repeated again, wanting to move on.

“You like your chances?”

“Of course I do.  With the likes of Smutty and Chase, plus we’re adding my buddy Kirby at short.  He’s got a good bat and speed, not to mention a hell of an arm.”

“And your…bat,” Shannon added, keeping her expression neutral.

Matt studied her before a slow grin grew.  “And what do you know about my bat?”

Her lips twitched.  “You swing a big one.”

He laughed and shook his head as his face heated.  “Now you’re embarrassing me because I’m not sure what we’re talking about.”

Shannon raised a brow as she reached for a glass of wine from the tray of a passing waiter.  “Of course I’m talking about your almost three hundred batting average including your forty home runs last year.  What are you talking about?”

“Of course that,” he replied dryly.  She managed to stay serious for a couple of seconds before starting to laugh and he joined in.

“Do you play any sports?” he asked.

Her eyes traveled down the length of herself and back up again, making him take another sip of his beer when his throat suddenly parched.  “Are you seriously asking that?”

“Well, I didn’t want to make any assumptions,” he said with a chuckle.  “Besides, it could be volleyball.”

“Basketball would be the correct assumption.  Played until college.”

“You didn’t want to play there?”

Shannon shrugged.  “I didn’t love it enough to put the dedication into it.  You play basketball or only baseball?”

“Yep, and football until I settled on baseball later in high school.”  He eyed her shoes.  “Too bad we can’t have a pickup game now.  I’d like to see your game.”

She gave him a smirk. “I bet you would.”

Sneak Peek: Bachelorette For Sale by Gail Chianese

BFS - Gail ChianeseBachelorette For Sale by Gail Chianese

This sparkling debut dives right in to everything funny, flirty, and fiery about modern dating with the tale of a sexy singles auction that comes with the prize of a lifetime…

As far as Cherry Ryan is concerned, the bright lights of Hollywood are nothing but glare after her heart is broken on a reality show for millions to see. Instead she’s throwing herself into fundraising for the local community center that was a priceless lifeline to her as a kid. But when a volunteer for the singles auction bails at the last minute, Cherry finds herself on the block—and sold to Jason Valentine, a handsome contractor with a gorgeous body—and a really bad attitude about her days in the limelight…

Cherry soon finds that Jason’s more than eye candy, and not entirely sweet—especially his quest to win the bid for the center’s renovation. Mixing business with pleasure doesn’t seem like such a good idea—until Jason has a chance to reveal the big heart beneath his surly exterior. Cherry’s falling for him hard, but trust isn’t easy when you’ve been burned. To conquer her fears will take a giant leap of faith—straight into the spotlight again…

Excerpt:

Boisterous laughter filled the air. Must have been a good joke shared between the two older gentlemen who made their way across the hotel foyer. Both wore powder blue tuxes with ruffled shirts and bow ties. At one time, say around 1970 or so, they’d have been quite dashing. Sort of like her grandfather, although he’d wear the outdated outfit now just to get her gram’s goat and snub society.

“Check out the babe. Now, that’s a rack,” one of them not so quietly whispered to the other.

Cherry’s creep-o-meter hit the red zone and maxed out. Hmm, party crashers perhaps. This wasn’t a dive, and the invited guests should have more couth than to make such remarks out loud. If they weren’t on her list, she’d call security and have them kicked out on their butts. For now, she’d play along and pretend not to have heard him. “Welcome to the West End Community Center Gala—”

“Say, aren’t you the girl from that reality show? You know, the one with all those men fighting over you and taking you on outrageous dates? I’m surprised you didn’t get them mixed up and call them the wrong name.”

Inwardly, Cherry growled at the man. Outwardly, she smiled and ignored his question and comments while trying not to choke on the overdose of Aqua Velva and Bengay. “Names, please?”

“Vernon Henderson,” the quieter of the two responded and then pointed to his nosy friend. “Burt Bennett.”

“You look different,” Burt said.

“What?” Cherry shot him a questioning look.

“Not saying it’s bad. Women should have some meat on their bones.”

Seriously, he just called her fat to her face? Like her scale didn’t announce the fact every week. As if she needed this prime male specimen to point out her flaws. “Aren’t you just the sweetest man? You remind me a lot of my grandpa. Perhaps you know him from the senior center? No? Oh, well. If you hurry you can still snag a good seat before they start serving dinner.” She gave a little finger wave as Vernon pulled Burt into the ballroom.

“She’s the one who caused that huge scandal with the singer fella on the show,” Burt told his friend as they left.

Ouch. Couldn’t say she didn’t see that coming. Still, if they knew the full truth, she could only imagine how deep their comments would dig. Thankfully, only one other person knew the intimate details of what really went on, and he wasn’t talking either.

About the Author:
Gail Chianese author picGail Chianese’s love of reading began at the tender age of three, when she’d make her grandpa read Fourteen Country Rabbits over and over and over again (and correct him when he skipped parts). While she’s branched out over the years by reading mystery, women’s fiction, and urban fantasy, she always circles back to romance in the end. That’s probably because she’s married to her real life hero. Her wonderful hubby has served in the US Navy for the past twenty two years and he’s done things he can’t tell her about. But it doesn’t stop her from being extremely proud of him and the sacrifices he makes for her, his family, and his country. He’s also uber-supportive of her dreams and of their three children. Living in Mystic, CT and a member of Connecticut Romance Writers of America, Gail loves to hear from readers. Sneak Peek: DRESSED TO KILL by Lynn Cahoon

0

DTK - L Cahoon CoverJill Gardner—owner of Coffee, Books, and More in the tucked-away town of South Cove, California—is not particularly thrilled to be portraying a twenties flapper for the dinner theater murder mystery. Though it is for charity…

Of course everyone is expecting a “dead” body at the dress rehearsal…but this one isn’t acting! It turns out the main suspect is the late actor’s conniving girlfriend Sherry…who also happens to be the ex-wife of Jill’s main squeeze. Sherry is definitely a master manipulator…but is she a killer? Jill may discover the truth only when the curtain comes up on the final act…and by then, it may be far too late.

DRESSED TO KILL Excerpt:

Sometimes what you see is not what you get. The small building had its doors flung open, looking more like a gaping mouth posed to devour us than the entrance into South Cove’s newest and only clothing business, Vintage Duds. Pots of flowers lined the sidewalk, giving the store what should have been a homey look. My aunt nudged me, and I took one halting step closer. I, Jill Gardner, owner of Coffee, Books, and More and South Cove’s business community liaison to the city council, knew a trap when I saw it. And this tastefully decorated store selling upscale designer clothing at a ridiculous price for used threads was definitely a snare.

“What is wrong with you?” Aunt Jackie snapped. “Just because Greg was married to the woman doesn’t mean the two of you have to be sworn enemies.”

Yep, the new store owner was my boy toy’s ex. Small towns are alike. You have to learn to forgive and forget because the person you fight with—or divorce—just doesn’t move away. It’s more than likely you’ll run into them at the grocery, or the diner, or even at a meeting you’re running. Life is messy that way. I turned away from the door, ready to sprint back to my shop down the street. “Maybe I don’t have to attend every Business-to-Business meeting. You could say I was sick.”

Jackie gently turned me around, linking her arm in mine. “You can do this. It’s just a two-hour meeting. You can do anything for two hours.”

As soon as we entered the store, I knew my aunt was dead wrong.

A hostess greeted us and gave us a swag bag. Aunt Jackie cooed and opened the silk ties. “A scarf, bubble bath beads, a coupon for a free glass of wine at Darla’s winery, and”—she pulled out one last item—“jewelry.”

The high school student grinned. “Keep digging. There’s a little something from every store in South Cove.”

“Except ours. Total waste of marketing money. You’re preaching to the choir with this group,” I muttered. Aunt Jackie quickly closed her bag and grabbed mine, as well, tucking them both into her purse.

“We’ll save those for later.” She smiled at our greeter and led me deeper into the store. Two chair-massage technicians had their area set up against the wall next to an eight-foot-square portrait of Marilyn Monroe. People lined up for their turn.

Bill Sullivan, our meeting chair, waved us over to where he waited in line. Bill was a member of the city council along with running South Cove Bed-and-Breakfast with his wife, Mary. “Great meeting, don’t you think? Sherry went all-out.”

“Is this a meeting or a party?” I waved away another high school student who had a plate of black caviar on crackers.

“Relax, Jill. We have plenty of time to get through the agenda.”

Daring TV Positive Critical Response for Netflix's DaredevilDaring TV: Positive Critical Response for Netflix’s Daredevil?
By Brooke Chaplan

Daredevil is a web TV series created for Netflix in association with Marvel Television and ABC studios, and set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe which means it shares the same universe as Avengers, Thor, and Iron Man. Based on the popular comic books, this show has been met with high expectations and already has a popular fan base.

What it’s About
The title character Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), is lawyer who leads a secret life as a costumed vigilante. The series traces his origin and also depicts the rise of the crime lord Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) who is the main antagonist. In addition to Fisk, other major characters from the comics make an appearance including Foggy Nelson (Elden Hensen), Murdock’s law partner, and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll).
Following with the comic book origins, Murdock was blinded in a childhood accident but his other senses were heightened. Unlike the characters of Thor or Ironman, Daredevil is a “street-level” superhero who’s more likely to fight gangsters than aliens. He is far more interested in helping the people in his part of New York, and stays a local hero.

The Critics’ Reactions
The series has become a surprise critical darling this past year. The website Rotten Tomatoes giving it a rating of 98% or “Very Fresh” rating.
Jonathan Hickman of Film Fix praised the series for its grittiness. He also noted the series takes a while to introduce characters and set up the plot, but he considered it good story telling, and described the series as a “slow burn” that mixes action with legal drama. He also praised D’Onofrio for his portrayal of Fisk, whom he called “one of the more disturbing Marvel villains to date.”
Chris Bennion for The Independent called Daredevil “essential viewing even if you’re not a Marvel fan.” He liked the director’s inventiveness in directing the fight scenes which he noted could have easily become repetitive. All of Daredevil’s superpowers are linked to his senses, so he fights like a normal, if extremely fit, human. While Bennion praised Cox’s skill in portraying Murdock’s moral conflicts over his activities, he did dock the show a few points for occasionally clunky dialogue.
Joanna Robinson, a critic from Vanity Fair enjoyed the street-level aspects of the show. Since Daredevil is essentially just a very fit man, he does get hurt. He even finds an ally in Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, a nurse who has the job of patching him up. Robinson believes that Daredevil’s vulnerability actually enhances his heroism, for he’s trying to protect others despite the risks to himself.

Other critics have praised the show for its faithfulness to the comics. It seems Netflix’s risk has paid off in a big way garnering fans of the original comics, as well as new viewers. Already loyal viewers are showing support as seen with costumes replicated everywhere from Momocon to the New York comic con. The show continues to draw praise and is due to premiere its second season in 2016.
