Author Jade Lee Talks About Cooking And Other Disasters

Part of the Authors at the Holiday Series

Jade Lee is multi-talented, bright, fun and someone I love to be around.  I caught up with her in Florida at the Novelists, Inc. conference and we chatted, laughed and talked about her new book series that starts in 2012.  She is so engaging and interesting I had to invite her to share some little holiday story with us for the Authors at the Holiday Series.  When she sent me her story I had to laugh. She and I are two peas in a pod. We suffer from the same talent deficiency in the same area. Oh, and we both love a good mocha latte! LOL

Enjoy!

Jade Lee

From Jade:

Not many people know that I eat a lot of raw food.  I pretend that it’s for health.  Isn’t a raw food diet trendy or something?  The truth is, I’m a terrible cook.  Worse, I despise cooking with a passion.  Hate it hate it hate it.  The causes aren’t all that complicated.  My mother was a fabulous cook, but she was tyrant in the kitchen.  So I learned early to avoid the kitchen unless it was to grab a banana, duck, then run.

A Fun Christmas with Santa and Jade

Once my mother passed, my home was the next logical choice for the holiday gathering.  Not a problem, I said.  Everyone’s welcome, but I’m catering.  Because I don’t cook.  OMG, the horror and drama the followed that statement.  Holidays are about home cooking everyone screamed.  Really?  I thought it was about good will, presents, and visiting with family and friends.  Apparently, to my family, it was about good home-cooked meals.

So, the holiday gathering was promptly moved away from my home to my sister’s in Chicago.  She cooks.  Good for her.  What’s my job?  My cherished holiday tradition?  One that will preserve for decades to come?

Santa and Jade make a coffee run!

I do the holiday Starbucks runs.  Yup.  Christmas eve, Christmas day, Boxer day–whatever.  There’s a Starbucks about 5 miles from my sister’s home, and it’s open on Christmas.  So that’s my job, and I LOVE IT!  Oh yeah, and I also have to help with clean up.  But that’s not nearly as much fun as a mocha latte.

Santa and Jade are Tight. He knows all about "nice" and Jade knows all about "naughty" LOL

Christmas is New Again as Author Renee Bernard Relives it with her Daughters

Part of the Authors at the Holidays Series

Renee Bernard is one of my favorite people in the world. She is charming, funny, talented, funny, sweet, funny, smart and well, you guessed it, funny! Not only does she write amazing books, but she is the host of Canned Laughter and Coffee which is a fun and light-hearted live online radio show that airs every Tuesday at 8PM ET.  But, even more important, Renee Bernard is a mother to two very lovely little girls.

Speaking to Renee about her little girls infuses you with wonder and joy.  She is so enthusiastic about them and about her husband that it’s nearly magical.  So, add in a dash of holiday cheer to that and Christmas at Renee’s house is funny, fun and full of laughter. I am so happy that she found a quick moment in her day to share something about her holiday.

From Renee:

Renee Bernard at Home

Every tradition I loved is getting pulled out and re-vamped as my little girls experience Christmas and the holidays.

Beautiful Girls!

It’s ridiculously fun to see events through their eyes–from that elf popping in and out of the house, Santa’s countdown, destroying **oops! I meant “decorating”! the tree and their invention of their very own Christmas carols.

We’re home, tucked in, and when I’m not writing ;-), I’m just playing with the girls and

making cookies.  No travel, no stress, no shopping.  Just us being us.

A Look at the holidays with NY Times bestselling thriller author Steve Berry

Part of the Authors at the Holiday Series

Bestselling Author Steve Berry

Steve Berry and his lovely wife Liz  are both talented, brilliant and kind. I met them in 2007 at ThrillerFest in New York City. They have that true romance between them that makes you believe in happily ever after.

Steve is brilliant, professional, clever, gracious and kind. I recall meeting John Grisham for the first time and I feel that  their demeanor is very similar. Southern gentlemen. If you read Steve’s novels you know they are extremely smart novels, well thought out, believable and fast-paced. He is a man who does intense research and pays attention to detail.  And though I am a fan of his novels, I have to admit to being a romantic at heart. The novels are amazing, but what really caught my attention about Steve is his dedication to his wife and family. Steve has always struck me as a man of integrity with an appreciation for all he has.

I was thrilled when he agreed to share a little of himself with us.  A holiday memory and a sneak peek into the life of Steve Berry.

Enjoy!

From Steve:

A Welcoming Home

The holiday season is the favorite time of year in the Berry house.  Every writer has ways to stimulate their inner muse — the process of decorating for Christmas is that for me.  We call it Elizabeth’s Christmas World (after the two Elizabeths in the house). It takes a week to set it all up.  Every item carries significance — either something we’ve purchased on our travels or that the children have made.  Each year, as we display the items in their appropriate spots, we’re flooded with memories.  For me, that soars the imagination.  We begin each year with a Thanksgiving trip to my parents home in Atlanta where my mother could probably feed a small army with the amount of food she prepares.  There is the traditional Southern fare, a few Lebanese treats (she’s full blooded, I’m half), and, thankfully, all my favorites.  From there, we enjoy the weeks leading up to Christmas with friends and family.

Holiday Memories in the Making

Lots of celebrations, all culminating at Christmas Eve.  Then, we pack everything up and rest for the week after at the beach.  That’s become a tradition, too, since the publishing industry is essentially closed, every year, from December 20th to January 2.  Hopefully, somewhere along the way, during that time, I’m blessed with some ideas for the new novel.  December is plotting time.  So far, I’ve been lucky each year.  Perhaps 2011 will be equally as rewarding.

Her Jewish Parents Celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday- not religious but loving

Part of the Authors at the Holiday Series

I met M. J. Rose in 2007, but had heard of her before that.  Her writing, her business acumen all were talked about in the circles I was part of.  Meeting her in person I was impressed with her confidence, her talent and ability to size up any situation in a split second with care and consideration.  I always wondered what made someone like this tick? She is interesting and a little mysterious.  She is talented and fearless.  So of course I was interested in how she spent her holiday. Luckily, she had some time to share a personal story about her family holiday. And, I love the picture!

Enjoy!

From M. J.

M.J. at age three

We’re Jewish but my parents believed we should celebrate it as a secular holiday – not religious but loving. Plus my Dad was in the toy biz and Christmas is the A number 1 holiday that paid the proverbial rent. So to make it a bit not so so religious my parents got a pink tree and it went with us everywhere.

When we went down to Florida for the holidays, when we stayed in New York City. And every year my mom and I had a special tradition of buying one more pink ornament for our Christmas Tree. (Or something that matched it). We’d go to Bergdorf Goodman in the city and make an afternoon of it – with tea afterwards where Eloise (my favorite character) lived at the Plaza. Too soon, I lost my mom 14 years ago. But every year I go to Bergdorf’s and buy my ornament and then go to the Plaza for tea. I go on my own – but the real present of the season is how much I feel my mom with me still.

A Sneak Peek at Christmas with a NY Times bestselling author!

Part 2 of the Holiday Series at Reader’s Entertainment

Dianna Love

I met Dianna Love many years ago at a book signing and as most people who have had the opportunity to meet her know, you feel an instant connection with her.  She is warm and welcoming and always smiling. Over the years I’ve learned that she is a very savvy business lady, clever, creative and talented. Beautiful inside and out, this lady is more than just a NY Times bestselling author, she is a powerhouse of talent. Though I don’t think she would ever admit to that. It’s true nonetheless.

I caught up with Dianna a couple of weeks ago. Her schedule is always busy and during the holidays even more so.  But, when I told her I was doing a series about authors at the holidays she offered to share a little bit about herself and sent us a couple of holiday pictures as well.

Enjoy!

The Christmas Frog!

From Dianna

I’ve included a picture of one of the two frog statues in front of our fireplace.  We decorate them for holidays all year (but they always have their cool sunglasses), but this is the first time they’ve had Christmas ball ornaments in place of their candles to go with their scarfs.

I want to share one of my favorite holiday memories of back in the 1990s when my husband and I had a wonderful black-and-tan Cocker Spaniel. She never touched the tree or the presents under the tree all season until Christmas morning when we’d pull our gifts out one at a time and tell her to open them. She’d then put her little paw on the package and pull the ribbon loose. Next she’d tear the paper in strips until the package was open without harming the gift.  She was such a wonderful dog our nieces and nephews loved to treat her with gifts just to watch her open them.

Anne Elizabeth an "all-weather" beauty inside and out!

From Anne

I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
~ Charles Dickens

The holidays are a very social and memorable time for our family.  The journey begins at Thanksgiving with family and friends – a four-day marathon event of cooking, eating, and cleaning – and transitions to community holiday parties sandwiched in between my writing schedule for comic books and novels; the RT Book Reviews column I write on comics, manga, and graphic novels; blogging commitments for a recent releases – right now that’s THE PENDULUM; workshops; and my husband Carl’s teaching schedule.  The pace is hectic but, in our opinion, completely worthwhile.  Here it goes…a snapshot of our holiday traditions.

Christmas Trees Bring Joy!

#1 Christmas Tree. When we’re finally ready to take the plunge, this is how the Christmas celebration commences.  Carl and I head out in the pick-up truck to find the perfect tree.  Our favorite choice is always a ‘living’ tree, allowing us to plant it after the festivities.  This is a fun excursion involving the dog and laughter and sometimes a little strong language; especially since there’s usually a wrestling match getting the tree into the truck, securing it, and then transporting it home.  The unloading comes next and then the placement of the lights and decorations.  When it’s all set, we turn off all the lights, sit together, and enjoy the beauty.  The smell brings back the past – our childhoods, our teen years, our adult years – and creates a vivid olfactory marker for the present moment as the silence and loveliness binds us closer together.

#2 Wood.  Next on our list is the annual gathering of wood for our old-fashioned wood stove: a fuel efficient, romantic, and very necessary way to heat our home.  Driving into the woods with a picnic (usually chicken or leftover turkey), we find the optimal spot.  Stop, cut and/or stack the wood in the truck until the weight makes our pick-up sag.  Then, we have our lunch, enjoying the fresh air.  The dog – our crazy yellow English Labrador – runs around us barking and sniffing, delighted by the wonderful smells and new territory.  Driving home is a much slower process as we work our

Gathering wood to stay warm

way out of the woods.

“Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.”
~ Charles Schulz

#3 Care packages to the Troops!  We try to do this one as early as possible so it has time to make the trek.  Every year, we pick different people or groups.  This year it is going to a SEAL Team.  Nope, we’re not telling which one, but, we were thrilled to put the package together with a few surprises and a lot of love.  This is number three, though we often push it to the beginning for shipping purposes.

#4 Baskets. Each year we put together baskets for individuals who live alone or are shut-ins.  Most of the folks on our list are military, since my husband is a retired Navy SEAL. I hand-pick every item and it means a lot to us that there are personal touches to bring a smile.

#5 Christmas Cards are a task that makes my husband roll his eyes but I truly enjoy it.  If only I could clone myself so I could send out more of them, I would be happy.  I handwrite notes on every card.

“When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things – not the great occasions – give off the greatest glow of happiness.”
~ Bob Hope

#6  Presents for the wee ones.  Carl has a large family, so we do little things for his sisters and brothers and then concentrate our efforts on the grandbabies.  This year, our grandson is majorly into puzzles and our granddaughter always adores books.  We enjoy lavishing love and goodies on them, though their favorite event is playing in the snow.  Yes, we actually do receive snow in the mountains above San Diego.  At a 4,000 elevation we have all the seasons, and the snow can be as deep as three feet or more.

#7 Seeing the lights.  In Ocean Beach, CA, there is a darling neighborhood that turns into a winter wonderland.  Several streets band together to decorate their homes and in doing so invite the whole city to visit.  When darkness sets in and the lights come on, these seemingly ordinary houses are transformed into magical places that dazzle the eyes and create a sense of excitement.  Sighs of beauty and comments of appreciating fall easily from smiling mouths until the scent of hot chocolate reaches our noses and then we must partake of the warm brew with the giant fluffy marshmallows.  Afterward, we talk about the exhibits that still tantalize our minds and imaginations.

#8 Sunset hikes.  My husband and I like to take our Lab on evening hikes to watch the sunset.  Sometimes, we walk around the small corner of our mountain or other times we hike to a peak where we can watch the yellows, oranges, and pinks streak across the sky and fade into the night.  I treasure this time together.

Christmas Cactus

#9 Connecticut. I miss my parents fiercely during the holidays.  We try to trade off houses and visit, but…there is never enough time together.  A favorite reminder of my parents and their home is the Christmas Cactus.  When I was a teenager, my mother had one and so did I.  We used to wait, with great anticipation, for them to bloom.  Mine was red and hers was pink.  As buds began to open, we knew Thanksgiving was around the corner, and after that would be Christmas.  It was nature’s alarm clock right in our own home.  So, before I went to college, we combined our individual plants into one giant planter.  Now, it is an explosion of pink and red and has doubled in size.  Just gorgeous!
After my husband and I married, I purchased one for our home and this plant surprisingly enough blooms randomly throughout the year.  We really enjoy the blossoms though we are baffled as to why it flowers so often.  It might not be an alarm clock like the larger planter in Connecticut, but it reminds me of my parents, preparing for the holidays, and family traditions.

“The earth has grown old with its burden of care
But at Christmas it always is young.
The heart of the jewel burns lustrous and fair
And its soul full of music breaks the air,
When the song of angels is sung.”
~ Bishop Phillips Brooks who wrote ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’.

#10  Catalyst.  As my husband is fond of saying, “Christmas is the time of the year when man, at least in this country, really seems to care about other people. They do things for each other – friends, family, strangers, anyone  – just because…”  I add this as a number on our list because in many ways this Spirit of Christmas is a springboard from our gratitude at Thanksgiving to our gift-giving during the holiday season.  Every kindness matters, and the best gifts of all are smiles, hugs, love and laughter.  All of these are worth giving, always.

#11 Church.  I am the grand-daughter of a minister and one of my earliest holiday memories was being in church on Christmas Eve.  All around me people were singing songs and I wiggled my way off my father’s lap and started to bounce along with the music.  I watch toddlers do this every year, their eyes wide and excited.  They listen, along with the congregation, relishing the story of Mary and Joseph as told through acting roles and others reading the biblical text. Lights flicker as the scent of burning candles fills the room.  The hush and subsequent raising of voices is a celebration, a joyful sound of reverence and honoring of faith as it fills the parts of my soul in an indescribably magical way.

#12 Christmas Feast. This is a gathering of family, friends, and sometimes strangers or recent acquaintances to fill the house with laughter and celebration.  Though, there are years it might be just Carl and me, and well, the dog, too.  However it happens to unfold – from rowdy to quiet – we enjoy this time to honor the birth of Christ and to be thankful for the love and joy in our lives.

Season’s Greetings to All!
From our house to yours, Happy Holidays!
Many blessings for a safe and joyful time!

Celebrating with joy!

Charlotte Bronte’s Books Sells for 1.1 Million

When author Charlotte Bronte was fourteen, she created a miniature book titled “Young Men’s Magazines”. The tiny tome is less than 20 pages and contains only 4,000 words. While the text is about a fictional place called Glass Town, many of the story plots readers have come to know in her adult works were begun in this book.

The winning bidder at $1.1 million was La Musee des Lettres et Manuscripts of Paris. They outbid the Bronte Parsonage Museum located at Bronte’s home in West Yorkshire. The collection at the Bronte museum features four manuscripts and winning this bid would have completed the series.

The Bronte Museum is in negotiation with the Paris museum regarding creating a copy of the manuscript for inclusion into their collection and perhaps securing a loan of the manuscript.
